Calp hosts the exhibition ‘Bitter Almonds’ by Andrea Chessa.
27 June

The Ajuntament Vell Exhibition Hall will host next week the exhibition “Bitter Almonds” by Italian artist Andrea Chessa.
Andrea Chessa trained within the context of Milanese and European artistic movements. In Milan, he graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and came into contact with the international artistic and cultural scene that characterizes the city—elements he integrates with his roots and the atmosphere of his homeland in a fusion of past, present, and future.
The Bitter Almonds exhibition offers an opportunity to immerse oneself in a meeting between two identities—Sardinia and Spain—a reflection on the cultural and identity roots that have shaped and connected these territories over the centuries.
The title of the exhibition evokes the memory of place, referencing the cultivation of this fruit tree that has played a key role in the history and culture of Calp, shaping the landscape with terracing and dry-stone walls, now almost vanished.
Through this title, a lost memory is evoked and hinted at—something familiar that reappears in the scent of an encounter. Flavors and knowledge that mark a festive time, colored silk paper wrapping “suspiros” (traditional sweets). Andrea Chessa’s exhibition presents a unique opportunity to reflect on the social and landscape functions of the almond tree, its connection to the land, to labor, and to material: a shared gaze that continues to travel along the shores of the Mediterranean.
The exhibition will be open to the public from July 4 to 30 at the Ajuntament Vell Exhibition Hall, located in the heart of the old town, adding yet another attraction to the area.
